Swimmers from across the region make a splash at Scarborough Pool!


Scarborough Swimming Club are celebrating hosting their first Spring Splash Meet at the Everyone Active managed Scarborough Sports Village pool, attracting hundreds of swimmers and their supporters from clubs across the North East. Scarborough’s Club President and Head Coach Sam Greetham, supported by his team of dedicated coaches and hard working volunteers, are building on the success of their popular summer A&B meet with the introduction of this new Spring Splash Meet and a Winter Open distance meet to be held in December. The club is offering development opportunities for young swimmers across the region and the chance to earn themselves medals, new personal best times and cash prizes for the overall Top Girl and Top Boy in each age group, with the possibility of County qualifying times, along with the highly prized Speeding Certificates. These are for swimmers who have improved their previous personal best entry time enough, to move them up to the next level of competition.


For this first meet of the year, the club welcomed swimmers from fourteen visiting clubs, along with a packed balcony of supporters. With A, B & C grades in all four strokes of 50m and 100m, along with the 100m and 200m Individual Medley races, swimmers in their first gala could compete alongside the more experienced County and Regional level swimmers. Thirty-six Scarborough swimmers, including 12 swimmers in their first licensed meet, took up the challenge of putting their winter training into practice with some impressive results.


The event opened with the girls, 11yr and over 200m Individual Medley race with ten Scarborough girls taking up this challenge. 11yr olds Lexie Atkin and Eleanor Kirby went head to head in the first heat of the day, to smash out huge new personal best times and earn a speeding certificate each , moving them up into the next Grade. Team mate 11yr Holly Draper also earning a good PB to earn Silver in the B grades. Alexandra Beeson opened her events in style, a powerful swim earned her a new personal best time, claiming the A grade Gold with the fastest 13yr old girls time for this event. 13yr old Team mates Rhionne Wilkin earning a B grade Speeding Ticket, Emily Kelly earning the Silver B grade medal and Megan Kelly coming in 4th. In the 15yr and over catagory, Scarborough were represented by Cailtin Wilson earning the A grade Bronze and Holly Franklin just behind in A grade 4th. With only a short rest, the older girls were back in the water going head to head in the power and speed 100m Freestyle. Scarborough’s 13yr old girls were in full competitive mode taking all 4 of the A grade top places. Gold for Georgina Calvert, Silver for Rhionne Wilkin, Bronze for Alexandra Beeson and only 0.05 of a sec behind, 4th for Maisy Smith. For the 15yr and over girls, strong A grade swims came from Holly Franklin, Martha Calton-Seal and Caitlin Wilson. The 13yr girls continued to dominate their age group, also taking the top 4 places in the A grade 50m Freestyle, this time Alexandra Beeson was victorious with a new PB of 31.15 , followed by Silver to Maisy Smith and Bronze to Rhionne Wilkin. 15yr Holly Franklin taking the A grade Bronze for her age group with a time of 29.99.


The younger girls then took up the challenge with the 12yr and under 50m freestyle event. For eleven of these younger competitors , this was their first open gala and they rose to the occasion, coping with goggle failure and standing up on the blocks in front of the packed balcony , with enthusiasm and determination. Very brave swims were rewarded with new personal best times, medals and valuable experience. The youngest swimmers at the gala, 9yr olds Abigail Pashby and Eleanor Nolan set the standard with fierce open graded swims. The 10yr olds followed suit, strong swims coming from Jasmine Conkerton, Loretta Nolan, Lucy Brown and Caitlin Dolby. Hannah Brown was pleased to earn the C grade Bronze medal and Saphire Tingle was delighted to be the C grade champion with her Gold medal. Lily Smith smashing out the fastest 10yr old time of 42.86 to move her into the B grades with a Speeding Certificate. For the 11yr olds, Holly Draper and Lexie Atkin were again speeding along in the B grades , with Naomi Canning and Alisha Conkerton earning pleasing new personal best times in the C grades, Eleanor Kirby proud to earn a Speeding ticket and moving up to a B grade. For the 12yr olds Madison Elder swam a strong A grade swim in 34.78 , while Daisy Keightley in her first open meet was very happy to earn the C grade Gold Medal, with a huge new PB time of 47.58. The younger girls pulling out good results in their 50m Backstroke, C grade medals were earned by Saphire Tingle taking the Bronze and Daisy Keightley a Silver Medal. Madison Elder earning the B grade Bronze, with 10yr Lily Smith claiming a B grade Silver. Speeding Tickets were claimed by Lexie Atkin and Holly Draper with strong swims and valuble competition experience for Eleanor Kirby, Naomi Canning, Alisha Conkerton , Jasmine Conkerton , Caitlin Dolby , Hannah Brown, Loretta Nolan , Eleanor Nolan and 9yr old Ella Berkeley in her first licensed gala.


The Scarborough boys were also making an impact at this new graded event. Six 12yr and under boys also took on the splash and dash sprint event of 50m Freestyle and every one of them earned themselves a new personal best time! A credit to their coaches, Sam Race and James Draper went head to head in the 9yr old open graded section with James earning himself a 5 second PB and, the on form Sam, claiming another Gold medal in a new PB of 37.01 seconds. 10 yr old Ryan Souter moved into B grade earning a Speeding Ticket along with 11yr old Paolo Messenger. 11yr Jake Prior-Mckie was pleased with his Silver Medal in the C grades and 12yr Samuel Myers was delighted with his C grade Gold Medal.


The older Boys followed with an A grade Gold in the 50m Backstroke for Scarborough Coach and Masters swimmer Luke Kelly, with 15yr Harry Butterworth in a close A grade Bronze and 13yr Joseph Moment taking the A Grade 5th, Joseph going on to claim A grade Gold in the 100m Backstroke. In the afternoon events a strong swim saw Harry claim A grade Silver for the 100m Freestyle with 13yr Matthew Wilson claiming the B grade Silver in the same event. The older boys closing their gala with the 50m Butterfly and taking a clean sweep of Gold medals. C grade Gold for 13yr Joseph Moment, B grade Gold for 13yr Matthew Wilson and A grade Gold for Luke Kelly.


At the end of the gala Scarborough Swimmers 9yr old Sam Race, 13yr old Alexandra Beeson and 15yr old Holly Franklin were delighted to earn Title of Top Boy and Top Girl, along with a cash prize. A thrilling end to the exciting day of swimming, with numerous Personal best swims from all the swimmers.
