Friendly Gala success for Team Scarborough.
Team Scarborough earned their first win of the year, at the Sadsa Junior Friendly Gala in Driffield. Competing with four other teams, Pocklington, Thirsk, South Hunsley and Beverley, the Scarborough swimmers were energetic and enthusiastic. For six of the 24 young swimmers , Sami Baloch, Freddie Fletcher , Jake Prior-Mckie, Sophie Ievers , Saphire Tingle and Hannah Brown, this was their first time at a competitive team gala but they were keen, cheerful and well supported by the rest of the team. The boys team Captain Jack Naylor and Girls team Captain Emily Kelly, did a sterling job of reassuring nervous swimmers and helping Team managers make sure all swimmers knew what race they were doing. The gala opened with team medley races of 4 x25m for each age group, 8/9yr olds, 11&under and 13&under. This was followed by a mixed freestyle relay 8/9yr boys and girls with Lily Smith, James Draper, Bess Naylor and Sam Race , showing their talent and race speed to earn the win . An exciting start to the gala with nearly every relay swimmer earning a new personal best 25m time and having an opportunity to practice those relay takeovers under pressure. The more experienced boys of Ma’in Omran, Jack Naylor, Bryan Hogg and Matthew Wilson also working very well together for a relay win. These were followed by individual races of 25m, with 50m events for the 13& unders and 4 x 25m Breaststroke relays. A chance for young swimmers to gain experience and older swimmers to practice events they don’t usually swim. The gala concluded with team 4 x 25m freestyle relays, for each age group and 3 cannon relays of 6 x25m , one for boys, one for girls and a mixed cannon to finish. A thrilling end to the gala with some very close finishes between the five clubs and many more personal best swims. The 13& under Girls of Lexie Atkin, Isabelle Towse, Holly Draper and Megan Kelly earning a 1st place along with another 1st place in the mixed age cannon boys team of Sam Race, James Draper, Ryan Souter, Eric Hobkinson, Jack Naylor and Matthew Wilson. The young Scarborough swimmers impressing visiting officials and coaches with their quality diving and underwater skills. A huge thank you to the Sadsa team, the host club Pocklington and Scarborough’s team coach Zoe Naylor and team managers Hamish Hobkinson, Micheal Draper and Luke Kelly, all the Coaches, officials, timekeepers , volunteers, helpers and supporters who make these galas possible.
